Welcome

Welcome to Sword and Cinema,

I began this website because I kept running into the same problem: anytime I would look up the best fantasy movies, the lists that came up had very few real fantasy movies on them. And by fantasy, I mean a story set in a made-up world with knights, magic, mythical creatures and evil villains. There is some wiggle room in there for what could be considered real fantasy, but those are the basic ideas. Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, and Groundhog Day are all defined as fantasy, but if you were looking for something along the lines of the Lord of the Rings or The Wheel of Time, they just won’t work. And so I began my quest to find all the fantasy movies I could and collect them in one place.

The main goal of the website is to be a database of fantasy movies, but I also wanted some reviews to give people a quick overview of each movie. I won’t lie to you; most fantasy movies are not great when compared to the usual standards. Small budgets, bad scripts and unknown actors means the quality will usually be very low. With that in mind, I’m not looking at them purely from an objective stand point, but how well they work as a fantasy movie. I am also not a film student, just a fan of fantasy. My hope is to help bring these movies to a wider audience. Most of these movies I had never heard of until I started looking for them. So take a look, and hopefully you’ll find something worth a watch.
